Publisher Description:

Welcome to Black Cat Weekly. I can’t believe it’s been 100 issues! Time flies when you’re having fun.

To help make this issue special, I asked Barb Goffman and Michael Bracken to contribute some special stories of their own. I think you’ll agree, they are among the highlights of this issue. On the mystery side , we also have stories by Nancy Pickard, Bradley Harper, and a novel from the legendary Fredric Brown—his classic Knock Three-One-Two. And what issue is complete without a solve-it-yourself mystery by Hal Charles?

On the more fantastic side of things, we have another of Darrell Schweitzer’s historical interviews with a legend of science fiction, this time Robert Sheckley. Conducted in 1981, it talks about his becoming fiction editor of Omni magazine, the science fiction community in New York City, and more.

As for fiction, we have that, too, of course. Fantasy from Joseph Payne Brennan and Aeryn Rudel. Science fiction from Larry Tritten, Frank Belknap Long, and a rare novel, The Green Girl, from Grandmaster Jack Williamson.

A big thanks to everyone who made the first 100 issues possible, including Acquiring Editors Michael Bracken, Barb Goffman, Paul Di Filippo, Darrell Schweitzer, and Cynthia Ward, staffers Sam Hogan, and Karl Wurf, and of course all our readers!

SMFS Members Published in Crimeucopia: Boomshakalaking! Modern Crimes for Modern Times

Several SMFS list members are published in Crimeucopia: Boomshakalaking! Modern Crimes for Modern Times. Published today by Murderous Ink Press, the read is available in digital and print formats at Amazon and other vendors. SMFS list members in the read are:

Brandon Barrows with “Play it Safe.”

Lynn Hesse with “Shrewd Women.”

Robert Parker with “The Zoom Room.”

Robert Petyo with “Virtual Murder.”

Publisher Description:

Boomshakalaking! Modern Crimes for Modern Times

So what’s in a name? ‘Boomshakalaking’ is a variant of the expression ‘Boomshakalaka’ and is currently recognised as a boastful, teasingly hostile exclamation that follows a noteworthy achievement or pulling off an impressive stunt. Basically its meaning is similar to in your face!

Which is why this anthology is subtitled Modern Crimes for Modern Times, because most, if not all, are not your ‘regular’ crime fiction pieces — in fact some quite happily dance along the edges of multiple genres and styles, while others skew it like it is.

Of the 14 who appear in this anthology, eight are new Crimeucopians, and even we have to admit that this is one of the most diverse sub-genre spanning anthologies we have produced so far, while still sitting under the umbrella of Crime Fiction.

As with all of these anthologies, we hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your comfort zone – and puts you into a completely new one.

In the spirit of the Murderous Ink Press motto:  You never know what you like until you read it.

But when her friend Roxanne stumbles across a man's body in the Gold Rush, a long-closed residential hotel, questions leap out. Who was he? What was he doing in the dust-encrusted herbal pharmacy in the hotel's basement? Why was the pharmacy closed up—and why are the owners so reluctant to talk?

With each new discovery, Pepper finds herself asking new questions and facing more brick walls.

Then questions arise about Roxanne and her relationship to Pepper's boyfriend Nate, away fishing in Alaska. Between her worries and her struggle to hire staff at the Spice Shop, Pepper has her hands and her heart full. Still, she can't resist the lure of the Gold Rush and its tangled history of secrets and lies stretching back nearly a century.

But the killer is on her tail, driven by hidden demons and desires. As Pepper begins to expose the long-concealed truth, a bigger question emerges: Can she uncover the secrets of the Gold Rush Hotel without being pushed from the wok into the fire?

SMFS Member Guest Post: YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU PITCH by Kathleen Marple Kalb (Nikki Knight) SMFS Vice President

Please welcome our Vice President, Kathleen Marple Kalb, to our SMFS blog today.

YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU PITCH

Guest Post by Kathleen Marple Kalb (Nikki Knight) SMFS Vice President

            Never be afraid to pitch.

At SMFS Watercoolers, we hear that a lot from people like Michael Bracken and Robert Lopresti, who sell and/or edit incredible amounts of great work.

But it applies to us ordinary hopefuls, too.

            With one very important caveat.

Unless you’re a legend, if you pitch widely, you’re going to get a lot of rejections. I’m (mostly) okay with that. If I take a long shot and it doesn’t pay off, well, at least I have the consolation that I took a risk.

But your mileage may vary. So, if you’re one of those folks who curls up in a pained ball for weeks over a rejection, the following advice may not be for you. If, on the other hand, you view rejection as simply an annoying and painful part of the process, ride with me.

Submitting work is never going to hurt you.

Well, clarifying a little: properly submitting your best work is never going to hurt you. That means rigorously following call rules and submission guidelines, and turning in clean, well-thought-out pieces that really represent what you can do.

As long as you’re doing that – fire away.

Got a great story that probably fits an anthology call? Easy – send it.

Think your work is good enough for one of the top magazines? Go ahead, take a chance.

The absolute worst that happens is that an editor looks at your work, decides it’s not for them, and rejects it. If you’ve followed all the guidelines and you’re not doing anything stupid or outrageous (submitting a rom-com fairy story to a noir mag, say) you’re doing your job as a writer, and everyone respects that.

Of course, in rejecting it, they’re also doing their job as an editor – so you have to deal with all of those no’s in the in-box.

But you might also get acceptances. Or you might impress the editor with the quality of your work and your professional approach and get a personal rejection of the “I’d like to see your next piece” variety.

The editors I’ve asked say they don’t send rejections like that to be kind – they do it because they really DO want to see more from you. So that’s definitely a win. Or at least a move in the right direction. It’s never bad to have someone aware of and interested in your work.

On a larger level, it’s never bad to be out there, doing good work, whether or not you’re selling to a given editor at the moment. Remember, writing is a small world, and it does you no harm to develop a reputation as a pro who does good work. At least that’s what I tell myself when I get one of those nice graceful rejections!

And sometimes, taking a wild chance really does pay off.

Just ask Grace the Hit Mom.

Back in the winter, I heard about a new startup publisher who was looking for lighter mysteries, but not conventional cozies. I knew one of the editors at Charade Media, so I pitched. With the understanding that this proposal wasn’t for everyone, and if it didn’t work out, I’d be back again later with something else.

And so, I sent off the proposal for WRONG POISON, a cozy mystery featuring an amateur sleuth who’s a suburban mom with a secret life as an assassin.  The proposal had been written for another publisher who took one look and ran screaming into the night.

I’d even had a hard time selling a short story featuring Grace the Hit Mom. (To this day, it’s in my files waiting for a home!)

But Charade Media said they wanted different, out-of-the-box ideas, and this definitely met that bar. So I sent the proposal, figured it probably wouldn’t go anywhere, and went on with my day.

            Except…

They got it. They loved it. And the first Grace the Hit Mom mystery, WRONG POISON, was published July 11th.

            Never be afraid to pitch!

WRONG POISON: She's a nice suburban mom and an assassin...and Grace Adair’s secret life has just become a problem. When a death at the Library Book Fair turns out to be murder – by a poison used only by Grace’s ancient sisterhood, she knows she’s in trouble. Now, she’ll need all her skills as a PTA mom and former prosecutor to find the killer and protect her friends…and their secrets. Hopefully without using her other skills. About those other skills: Grace and her sweet senior pal Madge are members of a 700-year-old order of lady poisoners, sacred to the Archangel Gabriel and sworn to remove evil men who elude human justice. Think #MeToo with untraceable poison.  Call it a cozy with a twist. You’ve never met anyone like Grace…and you’ll never forget her.

SMFS Member Publishing News: Here In the Dark: Stories by Meagan Lucas

Today is publication day for SMFS list member Meagan Lucas’ new book, Here In the Dark: Stories. Published by Shotgun Honey, the short story collection is available from Amazon and other vendors in print and digital formats.

Publisher Description:

Here in the Dark, the first collection from award-winning author Meagan Lucas, is a gritty genre blending wallop of short stories, set mostly in Southern Appalachia, that explore the female experience of lawlessness. In the tradition of Dorothy Allison and Bonnie Jo Campbell, Lucas tackles, with unsettling honesty: poverty, addiction, motherhood, and social justice in an increasingly troubled cultural climate. These are character-driven stories about crime, but less a who-done-it mystery and more a meditation on how the vulnerable navigate a world devoid of true justice. Unflinching in its gaze, Here in the Dark is an ambitious collection from a bold and empathetic storyteller.

Perceptive, intimate, and brave, these sixteen stories encompass shame and forgiveness, loss and redemption, oppression and revolution, and signal a new way of thinking about power and trauma. In “Voluntary Action,” a sheriff’s deputy witnesses the overdose of a high school friend in her custody. In “Buttons,” a little girl, bullied by the neighbor boy, gets her revenge with a needle and thread. In “Sitting Ducks,” a hurricane bears down on mothers, daughters, and sisters in an un-evacuated women’s prison. In “Asylum” an immigrant woman, suffering a terrible loss, sees ghosts in the hotel and houses that she cleans. In “Hell, or High Water” a young woman with Stockholm syndrome is abandoned by her kidnapper deep in the woods of Western North Carolina. And in “Here in the Dark,” a newly clean addict is given the opportunity to start over with her son if only she’ll snitch on her former lover and pimp, but discovers, of course, it’s not that simple. Blending Lucas’ musical prose with high-tension stakes, and resonant characters, Here in the Dark is a collection not to be missed.
